Rochester's South Wedge Neighborhood Social Network

My husband has accepted a position at the U of R and our family needs to move from Ithaca to Rochester. We love the South Wedge and desperately want to rent there, but we need at least 2-3 bedrooms and would prefer a house or 1/2 of a house. I'm having a hard time finding these... Any suggestions on where to look or does anyone have a house they would want to rent?

Beyond word of mouth, Craigslist is pretty much the gold standard. Used to be classifieds in the D&C, but $40-60 vs Free no longer gets much traction. I found my current apartment on Craigslist, but learned that you need to check frequently. Also be sure listings that say South Wedge are really located here. I saw listings that were many blocks away from the Wedge. Found my previous apartment in one of those free apartment hunter guides. Both have been excellent apartments. Also, if real estate is moving as slow as they say, maybe ask sellers if they wouldn't rather rent. UR also has its own housing listings linked to their website.

well by definition I believe the "wedge" borders are:
mt. hope, S. Clinton & GREGORY!
So that said, I think we can all agree that the houses south of gregory are still part of the wedge!
But yes, there is a lot of advertisements that use the "wedge" very loosely. Ellwanger-Barry & Swillburg are two neighborhoods that like to identify with the wedge. I personally hope they can start to get some recognition for their own unique charm and stop being treated like the ghetto. Many renters don't even know what the "wedge" is, if you try to explain Ellwanger or Swillburg they're just not interested, so it kinda sucks that there isn't more awareness of our little SE quad of the ROC. Ellwanger & Swillburg are pretty sweet IMHO.

I was referring to apartments advertised as being in the Wedge, but really in the Eastern Meigs, Monroe or Union Street areas, some distance from any of the neighborhoods you mention. But more than that, lacking in much of the charm, walkability and sense of community that characterizes our area. Maybe less safe, too. I don't consider the other side of the expressway to be the Wedge.

I totally agree with you. Do you consider Ellwanger & Swillburg as part of the wedge?

I have some issues with the fact that the Wedge is somewhat officially defined by SWPC, which is a development agency by city bureaucratic standards (including boundaries) rather than a grassroots neighborhood association that defined itself organically. I learned this when I discovered that the woman who owned the predecessor to The Mez was unable to get business-improvement funding from SWPC because she was on the wrong side of the street. That's why BASWA uses the phrase "South Wedge Area". I consider E&B (now called Highland Park Neighborhood) to be part of the Wedge. I don't consider Swillburg to be, since I see Clinton as sort of a boundary. But Swillburg may be even cooler than the Wedge, so it's moot. Certainly I consider this whole area (including Swillburg) to be an extended neighborhood - very distinct from Park Avenue, Monroe Avenue, Corn Hill and others. It's home.

BTW Jesster, what is your move in date?

We are pretty flexible as we currently own a home in Ithaca that is on the market... so it could be as soon as August or as late as October. In looking at rental properties, we would really like to stay within the boudary of Mt. Hope, Clinton, and Goodman. It just feels like a neighborhood we would really enjoy. Thanks for any information or leads you can give us!

Another thing to watch is New Digs ( http://www.newdigs.com ). This is a new apartment-hunting site that has just gone live. It's designed by Ben Munson, who also launched this site. Not too much right now, it's very new. But I'd keep an eye on it in the next few weeks for new content as they promote it more. Ben also has a house or two of his own to rent. See his profile here.

Gary: Thanks for the newdigs.com mention! We are ramping up our listing volume over the next few weeks and really going full throttle with promotion as we get into August. By the end of August, newdigs should be a pretty functional site.

Jesster: I am just signing a new lease on my available 2 bedroom unit today, but my Fiancee has one available. It's on Averill Ave. It's 2 bedrooms, with laundry included for $725/mo+ utilities. If you want to check it out, or have me email you pics, contact me on this site.

Hello, I actually could refer you to my current landlords, who are looking to rent out the entire house. If you're interested in taking a look, the house is on Weider Street in the South Wedge (ideal driving distance from UofR) and I could show it to you and pass along their info.

Feel free to e-mail or call: sabyreyeskulkarni@gmail.com or 473-5147.
