This past Friday night (9/4/09, just after midnight, so I guess that would actually make it Saturday morning) I was in bed, reading, when I heard a noise. I looked out my window and saw a young man in my next door neighbor's garage shining a flashlight in her car window, walking around it, looking in the windows. It took me a minute to process what was actually happening, but I soon realized this person was probably about to break into her car. I immediately called 911 and gave a description to the dispatcher and implored her to send an officer over. She pretty much brushed me off with a "Yeah, sure, ok." The guy must have seen me, or gotten spooked by something else, because he first moved off into the shadows of the garage, then disappeared altogether.
Had this person succeeded in doing what I think he was doing, that would make it three times in the last month that we have experienced a vehicle break-in. Unfortunately, I waited up for over an hour and the cops never came.
I am urging everyone to PLEASE leave absolutely nothing in your cars. And don't leave anything that would lead someone to believe you might have something hidden in a glove box, like a cell phone charger, etc., either.
My car was broken into a few weeks ago, and my boyfriend's was, too, about two weeks prior to that. We learned from Office Goater at the NET Office that there are recent parolees in the neighborhood who specialize in car break-ins.
Be hyper-aware at all times and PLEASE also try to look out for your neighbors, too.
