Rochester's South Wedge Neighborhood Social Network

This past Friday night (9/4/09, just after midnight, so I guess that would actually make it Saturday morning) I was in bed, reading, when I heard a noise. I looked out my window and saw a young man in my next door neighbor's garage shining a flashlight in her car window, walking around it, looking in the windows. It took me a minute to process what was actually happening, but I soon realized this person was probably about to break into her car. I immediately called 911 and gave a description to the dispatcher and implored her to send an officer over. She pretty much brushed me off with a "Yeah, sure, ok." The guy must have seen me, or gotten spooked by something else, because he first moved off into the shadows of the garage, then disappeared altogether.

Had this person succeeded in doing what I think he was doing, that would make it three times in the last month that we have experienced a vehicle break-in. Unfortunately, I waited up for over an hour and the cops never came.

I am urging everyone to PLEASE leave absolutely nothing in your cars. And don't leave anything that would lead someone to believe you might have something hidden in a glove box, like a cell phone charger, etc., either.

My car was broken into a few weeks ago, and my boyfriend's was, too, about two weeks prior to that. We learned from Office Goater at the NET Office that there are recent parolees in the neighborhood who specialize in car break-ins.

Be hyper-aware at all times and PLEASE also try to look out for your neighbors, too.

That sucks! Such a terrible feeling when you witness something like this. What part of gregory is this on?

Between Ashland and Mt. Hope.

That's really, really frustrating. Thanks for the heads up. I know my girlfriend and I have been trying to keep our eyes open for suspicious activity on our end of Gregory (between South Ave. and S. Clinton), and we are both more than ready to call 911 or 311 when the situation demands it.

Also, just a heads up that I have noticed some really sketchy activity on the S. Clinton end of Gregory St., a lot of people hanging out in the 999 Mart's parking lot. I'm a little too naive to know if it's drugs or just people hanging out, but I called 311 anyway to let them know what was going on and I've seen, almost daily, a patrol car slowly going up and down our street. So it does work!

Thanks again for the heads up.

I live on gregory as well and a few weeks ago I was sitting at the fire in my back yard when six kids tried to kick in my front door... We chased them right to their house about four doors down from me and yet when RPD arrived and went in there even though the clothing they were described as wearing matched etc their parents swore they were home all night.. Alot of us walk this nieghborhood nightly and try to discouage this behavior but when we have parents like that as well as landlords who will rent to anyone this is the result...

Dane, I've had a few run ins with Gregory St. kids. What house are you talking about?

I know of some trouble makers who are on the other side of our next-door neighbor's house. Perhaps they're the same kids. They were involved with the kid who was punched in the face and then had his bike stolen. And, they were also involved a couple of months ago in another incident in which a neighbor of ours across the street was shot by a BB gun. We used to see this kids sitting out on the roof of their back porch shooting at squirrels in their back yard. The cops finally got involved in that and took the BB guns away. Unfortunately, not much else can be done because that house is owner-occupied.

yeah those are the kids. I live behind them, used to see the older brother/cousin on the roof with his friends trying to smoke cigarellos. the younger ones have been cutting through my neighbors yard to get to Hickory St. I spoke to them last week about it and told them to pick the trash up off the sidewalk.
Those boys tend to listen when told the right thing to do. Problem is I'm not their parent, never even seen their mom.
They used to tease my dog until I told them she bites.
They stopped.

Hi All,

I was just hopping on to report a theft from my porch as well and saw this post. I live off of Gregory on Cayuga St. and my porch furniture (which was very portable fold ups and not expensive at all, regardless) was stolen over night last night. I called it in to 311, but I guess it's just more reinforcement to be hyper aware!

I headed off to work without thinking to check my backyard and windows, so my boyfriend will do that to be sure nothing else was taken or messed with. Disappointing indeed!

Someone tried to break into the garage on linden street. it was in august..it happened about 4am...they did not succeed because for some reason both my landlord and I had woken up at that time. the police came but they just walked up and down the street and didnt find anything

Just an FYI:

This past weekend I was walking my dog on Nicholson St. (right next to The German House), and I saw a young man (no more than 15-16) pushing not one, but TWO bikes up the street in the middle of the day. At first I thought he was walking with his grandmother/mother and pushing her bike for her(I apologize if I am way off on that one), but then he started yelling profanely at the older lady and she just kept on walking without looking in his direction and never responded to him, she looked upset by the whole thing. But, when he saw me and my dog he did everything he could to look the other way and really picked up his pace. I was home in a matter of minutes and called 311 to report some suspicious activity. Of course, I never heard anything back from them, but did put a call in.
Just so everyone knows what the kid looks like: He was white, really skinny, about 5'8" wearing an extremely baggy white t-shirt, extremely baggy jeans, his hair was very short and brown (almost plastered to his head). He was pushing a very nice looking, thick framed, bright yellow mountain bike and a thin framed, red Schwinn(?) Just an FYI for every body here.

I apologize if I am way off on this, it could have been a dysfunctional family outing after all, but I called it in just to be safe.
