So I was walking home from work tonight and passed a lovely young couple who was letting their dog take a great big giant crap in front of Houseparts.... and then they just walked on.... without even a thought to pick it up.
I AM SOOO SICK OF DODGING DOG CRAP WHEN I'M WALKING AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
I watched them go home, and I don't know who to call...

I have the same frustration. There is a house on Gregory Street that is home to three large dogs. Every morning (on seasonal days) they walk all three LOOSE down Gregory and back. The dogs bark constantly and crap in everyone's gardens, on sidewalks, lawns etc. They NEVER bother to pick the monster craps up either! I don't think there is really anyone to call or report them to. I think a simple reminder next time they walk by is the best anyone can do. I also heard sprinkling black pepper on your lawn helps. Who knows tho.
Anyone else have any ideas?
31-4 All dogs to be leashed. [Amended 12-8-1992 by Ord. No. 92-418]
All dogs in the City of Rochester are hereby required to be restrained by a leash while off the owner's premises, whether such dogs are or are not tagged or licensed; provided, however, that dogs are permitted to be unleashed while off the owner's premises when on the premises of another person with such other person's consent; and no person who owns, keeps, harbors or has the care, custody or control of any dog in the City of Rochester shall permit such dog to be at large or unleashed in said City except as permitted by this chapter. Whenever a dog is outside the owner's house on the owner's premises or on the premises of another with that person's consent, such dog must be under the control of the owner, on a leash or in a fenced area so that said dog cannot leave the premises. A leash shall not extend beyond the premises onto other premises without that property owner's consent or onto public property, or the dog will be considered unleashed.
31-8 C. Deposit waste or commit a nuisance on a sidewalk, street or other public property or on the private property of another person. It shall be the duty of each dog owner or person having possession, custody or control of the dog to remove any feces left by his or her dog on any sidewalk, street or other public property or on the private property of another person. This subsection shall not apply to the owner or person having possession, custody or control of a guide dog, hearing dog, service dog or police work dog. [Amended 3-25-1980 by Ord. No. 80-131; 12-8-1992 by Ord. No. 92-418]
Maybe if there could be a fenced in area for people to bring their dogs to be off leash (like ellison) it would help. At least MOST of the $hit would be out of the walking areas / front lawns... Not much you can do but ask the person to pick it up... if they don't - pick it up later and put it on their stoop so they're guaranteed to step on it themselves... vinyl gloves are cheap :D Maybe leave a note that reads "I cleaned up your dog's $hit, next time it will be smeared all over your ________. We could try putting up some signs, or maybe giving out tickets for awhile... then maybe they'll get the picture...
I talked to an RPD friend of mine, and he told me to call 311 and ask for Animal Control. I asked him if I would be just annoying the animal control officer and he said it was totally appropriate to let them know. The officer will come out to their house, probably give them a warning, but a ticket could also be issued.
In the future, I'm not going to be so shy, but I'm not planning to be too antagonistic either.... I'm just gonna pick it up, put it in a bag, knock on their door and mention that they forgot something.
Seriously tho... taking a Wegmans bag along to pick up your dog's crap isn't so hard. Good Grief!
This is the guy who lives in the building with the S+A Mart on South Ave.
Most of the time he takes his dogs to the empty lots behind solera and openface. but the sidewalks around are not off limits to him either. They dump there too. Can see him from the house.
When I politely asked him to pick up his dog crap... I was told to f*ck myself and flew me the middle finger. Not very neighborly. Being a dog owner and home owner in the wedge, It absolutely pisses me off when renters come into the neighborhood and shit all over.
I say start photographing them and posting them.
I have noticed on the River Trail on the Corn Hill side and also on Broadway across from School Without Walls that there are bag dispensers and waste cans set up to encourage pet owners to pick up after their dogs.
I don't know if this is paid for by the city or if it's an initiative taken by the residents, but I wonder if it's something we could do in the Wedge?
