I've got the perfect porch to sit around and knit on--maybe a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in a couple of weeks? (Let's get through next week's much cooler weather first!) Anybody interested? Kind of a get acquainted/show and tell thing?
Sorry for the very delayed posts--my crazy times kicked in! I was just looking at the plans on the web for wwkip day--that's World Wide Knitting in Public Day, which is June 14. (It's a Saturday). Any takers? Check out wwkipday on the web. Is there a way to add links to posts? If there isn't there should be!!
YEAH!! I'm definitely going to try to recruit others for this historic knitting event... Eliza will be out of town by then, but I know I will find others!
I'd love to sit on Marta's porch and knit on June 14th!
I had an idea this weekend that I'd like to toss out there for everyone's feedback. Bob Boyd's been working with the Somali community a lot recently. One thing that came out is that the boys play soccer (which is good) but the girls are not allowed to. Also, I almost never see the women around. Some of this is a cultural difference, which we have to respect, but I was wondering if some of us could work with the women and girls on learning to crochet and knit? If anyone is interested, I'll talk to Bob about how to approach the Somali folks.
Cool! I figure the porch can hold a half dozen or so--if it looks like a big group, we might want to join the event at the church at the corner of Monroe and Rosedale St. (I think their event is from 11 to 2--we'll need to check the web site). Also like the idea of knitting or crochet with the Somali ladies. I might not be able to participate much, but I'll bet I can donate some practice yarn.
Another option would be to spend a bit of time at various Wedge venues, like the coffee shops etc--kind of a "knit crawl". This would be a more expensive option, what with buying a refreshment or two--but we could alternate "Pay" venues with free ones, like the park at South and Alexander (I personally think we should get a photo of Mr. Rochester with a lap robe--or a hat on his head!) and of course various porches, so it's not killer expensive.
