hello all,
this is a picture of our "hidden garden" last summer. I have been trying to move to a 4 Season Garden by adding junipers and winterberry. I'm thinking of redoing the front of my home with holly as well.

So glad I found this! I'm a new homeowner in the Wedge and I need massive gardening help...any takers? I really like plants and gardening, but I'm a complete novice. I have a school project with my special education students in Fairport maintaining the courtyard gardens outside of my classroom, but that is the only off-the-cuff gardening experience I have. My big problem right now is not time, ambition or creativity, but LAYOUT! If anyone has landscaping experience and would like to give me advice on how to plot out my beds, I'd greatly appreciate it. Right now I literally have barren, overly weedy dirt for a backyard. And by "backyard" I mean side lot. Ha...I have a very interesting, tiny, urban space that needs some ingenious designing. I'm willing to even pay a professional if someone knows a reasonable person for me to contact. It's a tricky space, but I'd like to make it beautiful. Help?!

South Wedge Gardening Help Needed

BASWA (The Business Association of the South Wedge Area) is in need of 4 volunteers to help landscape the park known as “Star Alley” next to Lux Lounge at 666 South Avenue, the week of May 26 through 31st.

1) Sometime prior to Saturday May 31st, we need 2-4 people to remove the sod from the marked area that we are going to make into a flower bed and a patio. The sod can be taken and re-used by anyone, or discarded. We will be marking out the bed and the patio by Sunday May 25.

2) On Saturday May 31st, starting at 9:30 AM, we need 2 – 4 people to help with:

 Moving and leveling the heavy slate pavers onto the patio area, on top of the gravel bed we’ll have set.
 Spreading sand or gravel into the spaces between the pavers.
 Once the pavers are moved, the gravel in the back should be raked into a pile at the back of the lot.
 Planting the annuals under the direction of Stacy Shannon, landscaper manager.
 Spreading the mulch over the beds after the planting is completed.

Lunch will be provided for all volunteers.

If you are able to help with the project please call Chris at 325-2329, or email chris@historichouseparts.com

Hi Gardeners!
The planters along South Avenue were purchased by BASWA, the Business Assoc. of the South Wedge Area. We' continue to add a few more each year. You've seen our struggles over the past several years with maintaining them. We've tried asking business owners to water, and we've tried hiring a company to do it. We've had inconsistent results. This year we are excited to have the Garden Factory creating the arrangements for us, and growing them from seed. They will be bringing these pre-grown potted arrangements out to deliver to us the week after Mother's Day. We'll need to clear out the dirt from the old planters prior to that. (Tracy Saville will be planning some work days to do that very soon, we'd love to have some help with it!) We've also been struggling to create a consistent watering plan so if any of you are interested in helping with that please let me know.
Two more gardening opportunities:
1) If any of you want free annuals to plant around city trees, either on your neighborhood streets or along South Avenue, let me know, the city will provide them to you FREE. The catch is that you need to plant them around a tree.
2) BASWA is hoping to do some landscaping in Star Alley (on South Ave next to Lux) in the next month. Is anyone interested in participating in this? We'll be moving some pavers to create a patio space, and tilling some garden space around it, and making some gravel pathways. If you want to help with this community project let me know. BASWA will be hosting free concerts in this garden space on the Third Thursday of each month through October.

Uh-Oh! I was waiting to receive mail in my primary email account when no posts are added. I guess it only gets sent when it's an actual email. Hmmm...
Anyway...thanks for the info Bruce. I won't try to steal her planter then. LOL.
Well I willmake it a point to sign in since I now know posts on the MAIN wall don't get sent to primary accounts!!

Sonia!

I have actually seen a woman watering that exact planter you mentioned - I think she lives in the house on the east side of the street, and I have watched carry over milk jugs with water in them, so at least that one gets some attention. The planters I have mentioned are on the strip of South Ave between the intersection with Mt. Hope and Linden St. Some of the planters get good attention - I know that Shawn Wallace waters the ones at the end of Hickory St, but other seem to just dry out from lack of attention. With daily watering and weekly fertilizer, these planters would look stunning in the summer. Perhaps we can encourage more people to adopt these. Someone mentioned last summer that local businesses adopted these planters as the plantings are funded through BASWA. I will share more as I gather information.

Hi Bruce!
I too await anxiously for Spring to get here for good! I have wondered who does those planters along South Avenue myself. The cement one at the pie median (traffic light) at South Ave /E. Henrietta comes to mind as I travel that road almost every day. I'm not familiar with where the others are though. I wondered if perhaps those polymer pellets (Soil Moist) would help retain moisture in the soil between waterings. I've used this product in my hayrack flower window boxes and have found them to work well since the moss liners dry out so quickly. I'm sure they would work in the planter application as well. The pellets swell back up once the containers are watered again. Soil Moist can be found at most garden centers or even places like Home Depot. I wonder if the planters are done by a group of volunteers or residence who adopt a planter. I've actually considered looking into these planters and thought of adopting one myself. I've had lots of great sun loving plant ideas for that particular planter. But being in that direct sun all day and the heat from the black road does probably require more waterings than your average container. I will do some research and look into some more info on these planters. If you hear of anything new ...please do share :)

Spring is Here! But you wouldn't know it by today's weather. Thinking ahead for our coming growing season, I was wondering if there is something we can do this year to work with who ever is responsible for the planters along South Ave. I want to say this is a project of BASWA - but the planters do not seem to get enough water and attention during the season. What can we as SW gardners do to be a part of this? Any thoughts?
