Unfortunately, there will always be questionable options when it comes to the "best of Rochester" nominees.

Just an FYI: This past weekend I was walking my dog on Nicholson St. (right next to The German House), and I saw a young man (no more than 15-16) pushing not one, but TWO bikes up the street in the middle of the day. At first I thought he was walki…

I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but does anyone think the recent uptick in bike theft and car break ins has anything to do with the city dropping it's curfew for teenagers and children? I don't want to be an ornery old man blaming those ras…

That's really, really frustrating. Thanks for the heads up. I know my girlfriend and I have been trying to keep our eyes open for suspicious activity on our end of Gregory (between South Ave. and S. Clinton), and we are both more than ready to call…

We have larger animals, too. A week ago, I was out for a morning walk on Mt. Hope, going by the Patrick Barry property (the old Ellwanger-Barry nursery office now owned by the university), when I startled three deer that were grazing on the front la…

Raccoons are all over. I live on Gregory a little ways down from Ashland toward Mt Hope and I have had three major raccoon sightings. My dog was barking one night and I opened my back door to see a huge, scared raccoon plastered up under the eves on…

That's almost exactly what happened to me last week. I heard a rustling overhead, my dog was going bonkers and when I looked up a slinky, chubby gray body was clambering about on the tree branches up above. 15 minutes later 3 of the little guys had…

Profile Information

To me, the South Wedge is...
... Something of a mixed bag. You have your ornery hipsters, your fastidious octogenarians angrily thumbing their nose at the young people and of course there are those that fall between; the middle aged crowd with their recently produced spawn stacked into strollers trying to 'make it' as best as they can. I love them all and wish them the best of the best in the days that are ahead.
I'm a resident of... (street name if in the wedge)
Gregory St.
About Me:
I live with my girlfriend and love of my life Katie, we have a dog and his name is Vinnie. Consequently, we live in a house, it is made of brick and wood and has floors and a roof; much like the house or apartment you reside in, or if you are a hobo and without a standard place to hang your hat, take a look around the public library you're reading this in and imagine it without the books and that's basically a house with the added bonus of an older lady telling you to be quiet while you masturbate.
I enjoy music, television shows, the cinema and alcoholic beverages; all as often as humanly possible.
I am a shameless egotist with no self esteem and prefer to live my life according to a contradictory philosophy.
I once 'barked at a hipster' while drinking a Pabst Blue Ribbon one night at Lux; the comment is too lewd to post on a family friendly web site, but went like this "Jim backs up and bumps into a Caucasian Female Hipster, complete with thick framed black glasses and two toned yin-yang like outfit, he apologizes with an 'oh, I'm sorry' to which the aforementioned female hipster responds 'no you're not' at which point Jim barks in reply ' then f_ck off and keep walking' both parties are equally confused as to the nature of their relationship at this point and begin to weasel away from each other." If you are that female, my apology and my zinger were both sincere.
I enjoy music, especially if the artist(s) is(are) skilled in instruments like the guitar, drums, piano and bassoon, and can play the instruments while someone, preferably a member of the troupe, is singing lyrics into a microphone.
The biggest influence in my life is Homer Simpson.
The second biggest influence in my life is Daniel Webster.
The third biggest influence in my life is Jesus of Nazareth College, the carpenter who fixed the picnic table outside my friends dormitory one night when I drunkenly threw a TV Set out the window and broke the table. Jesus said nothing to the authorities, effectively keeping my record clean. He was a great man.
I have trouble ending things.

Briefly...

... to summarize my existence on a web page at first glance seems like a fruitless endeavor, but at second and third glances I am able to see how little there is to actually tell about myself and my interests.

Crazy? Check. Drunk? Check.

"So it goes." - Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughter House 5

Any self respecting hipster worth his salt can spit out a decent Vonnegut quote these days, but I'm not a self respecting anything. When I look back at my life I think about the horrible things I've done to my body and the words "self respect" never come into play.

I spent a good three months of my life on a couch drinking a handle of vodka or whiskey or whatever was around the house or cheap enough to buy at the liquor store across the s… Continue

Happy Wear Green Day...

When my clock-radio alarm went off this morning I was treated to the soothing sounds of the bagpipes. I hit snooze. Nine minutes later I was aurally engulfed in the Irish Ballad of "Danny Boy." I hit snooze. Another nine minutes passed before I heard the monotone voice of NPR's morning news man reporting on the most recent developments in the AIG bailout fandango. I did not hit snooze. I made my way out of bed and let my dog out to do his business. I brushed my teeth. I showered. I put on a blue… Continue

Tiger is Back... yes I'm a freak about Golf... bite me.

Today at 12:02 PM (pacific time), Eldrick "Tiger" Woods returns to the PGA Tour for the first time since he won the US Open last summer... on one leg... in a 19 hole playoff... on one leg. In case you didn't understand the full force of that last statement I'll elaborate: The US Open is a standard, stroke-play tournament that lasts 72 holes and is known throughout the world to be a patience testing, body numbing golf battle that even some of the greatest players of all time have buckled under th… Continue

Hey Hipsters! It's Oscar Season!

Like the vast majority of the ironic t-shirt wearing crowd I pride myself on my taste in movies, but, unlike the majority of the thick framed glasses masses, I'm a dick about it. I don't take myself too seriously, because that would be impossible. I'm a bad day and losing my keys away from being homeless and I get all my entertainment via Netflix, Hulu and the incredible DVD collection I've amassed over the past few years. Still, while my tastes may very, I know what I like. So without further a… Continue

Remember this day, or forget tomorrow; whichever comes first.

Rare is the person who has the ability to inspire an insipid cynic like myself, but Patton Oswalt has managed to both inspire and encourage me. All without ever having met this man. I know I'm wading carefully into stalker territory when I write about someone I've only met via his stand up comedy DVD's, his Spew blog on www.pattonoswalt.com and various other media at my finger tips (thanks internets!), but I don't entirely care. Mainly, because I'm a gig… Continue

Well Jim- I must say I loved your blog about the Wedge... and judging by your profile picture, I am almost positive I saw you (and the lovely dog) at the South Wedge farmers market this evening... I am glad you like the Wedge, and PS- Its pretty neat about your dad and the clock tower.
